Linde announces $2bn in Canada’s ‘largest’ clean hydrogen site, powering Dow’s Path2ZeroIssuing time:2024-09-07 21:40 Lindewill invest $2bn to build what it believes to be the largest clean hydrogenproduction facility in Canada, marking its largest-ever single investment.
Unveiledon 27th August, the Alberta-based clean hydrogen andatmospheric gases facility will supply Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan’s Path2Zeroproject.
Thecomplex will use autothermal reforming, combined with Linde’s HISORP® carboncapture technology, to produce clean hydrogen. It will also recover hydrogencontained in off-gases from Dow’s ethylene cracker.
Duringthe first phase, Linde will supply clean hydrogen, nitrogen, and other servicesto Dow’s integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives site. In addition tosupplying the Net Zero project, it will also supply existing and new industrialcustomers in the region.
Start-upof the plant is scheduled for start-up in 2028 and the complex will capturecarbon dioxide emissions for sequestration in excess of two million metrictonnes each year.
SanjivLamba, CEO of Linde, said the project aligns with the company’s strategy ofdeveloping high-quality projects with secured off-take.
“Ourtechnology, experience, and execution are enabling the transition to a cleanereconomy. We are proud to partner with Dow in its mission to decarbonise itsFort Saskatchewan site and are appreciative of the support of the Province ofAlberta and the Federal Government.”
TheDow Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero project is a $6.5bn project, excludinggovernmental incentives and subsidies, that includes an ethylene cracker andincreasing polyethylene capacity by two million tonnes per annum as well asretrofitting the site’s existing cracker to Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Toachieve Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the FortSaskatchewan Path2Zero project will deploy Linde’s air separation andautothermal reformer technology to convert the site’s cracker off-gas to hydrogen, which will be used as a clean fuel to supply the site’s furnaces. JimFitterling, Chair and CEO of Dow, said, “Having support from collaborators andpartners across the value chain is essential. We’re glad to have Linde as apartner on this industry-leading project.”
